Working with Triple Base Gallery, Tenderloin Economic Development Program, and Central Market Community Benefits District, the Mayor’s Office of Economic and Workforce Development and San Francisco Arts Commission will temporarily place original art installation by San Francisco artist in vacant storefronts on Central Market and Taylor Street in Tenderloin to engage local artists in reinvigorating neighborhoods and commercial corridors providing free and temporary venues to artists for exhibition, and instigate a positive change that will make the storefronts more attractive and appealing for leasing. Similar treatment will also occur on Third Street in Bayview and Lower 24th Street in the Mission.

Installation will begin on September on at least 10 storefronts on Central Market between 5th and 7th Streets. Additional locations on Taylor Street will be installed in October.

Work will be displayed until February 2010.

PUBLIC AMENITY PILOTS
Coming in October 2009

The City is reintroducing comfort and positive image to Market Street by providing public amenities at strategic sidewalk locations.

In partnership with community groups and building owners, new mini-plazas will be piloted at strategic sidewalk locations. These plazas will feature a combination of seating, tables, landscaping, and windbreak systems. They may contain an anchor kiosk that offers food and drinks, or be part of adjacent building services.

Coming in September 2009

The City will be piloting several strategies to test ways to improve public transit reliability, to provide safe and improved experiences for pedestrians, and to create better connections between north and south districts and neighborhoods.

Traffic Reduction

Starting September 29

Beginning Tuesday, September 29, private vehicles on eastbound Market Street will be required to turn right at 8th and 6th Streets.

The purpose of the trial is to determine if discouraging through traffic on Market Streetcan improve transit and pedestrian conditions along the corridor.

Signs will be installed along eastbound Market Street starting at Van Ness Avenue encouraging drivers to turn off of Market on 10th Street in advance of reaching 8th Street, where the right turn will be required.

  • This trial will be effective all day, seven days a week.

  • Pedestrian, cyclists, public transit vehicles, taxis, emergency vehicles and delivery vehicles will still have full access to Market Street.

This pilot program is the first of several pilot projects designed to determine how best to improve transportation conditions on the Market Street corridor.  The City will closely monitor the changes to determine its impacts and will be refined as needed.

Pedestrian Experience Improvement
Working with the Union Square Association and with the Greater Union Square Business Improvement District, we are working on improving the pedestrian experience along Powell Streetbetween Hallidie Plaza and Union Square.
